The Parrot Pavilion

Vincent Meessen and Vermeir & Heiremans are among the many guest artists invited to contribute to The Parrot Pavilion, part of the Triennale Kortrijk

30/08 – 06/10/2024

The Parrot Pavilion is created by artist Nico Dockx, VOET architecture and Studio Zuidervaart for the Triennale Kortrijk. The structure moves together with man and nature like a living organism and has minimal impact on the environment. Over the five-week period, canvases are hung within the tubular structure. Nico Dockx invited several guests to work on these canvases. The pavilion symbolically ‘sails’ into the city and occupies public space. The concepts of sustainability and democracy are woven into the Parrot Pavilion’s construction and programme.

Playing with allusion and quotation of two different Marcel Broodthaers works involving parrots, both dated from 1974, works being thus each 50 years old – « Ne dites pas que je ne l’ai pas dit » and « Dites partout que je l’ai dit » – Meessen’s contribution is a tribute to Marcel Broodthaers’s centennial.

Here, two parrots are brought together, and their words, repeating Broothaers’s titles, create an enigmatic dialogue of the deaf. Or drawing as witticism.
