Exhibition by Eleni Kamma at Centre de la Gravure et de l’Image Imprimée de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles

09/04 – 24/07/2022

Opening: 08/04/2022, 19h

Alongside her own practice, Eleni Kamma shows works by Pierre Alechinsky, André Balthazar, Pol Bury, Jean Brusselmans, Zéphir Busine, Nathalie Coen, Pasquale Cristallo, Francis De Bolle, Élodie Delvaux, Fabien Delvigne, Daniel Fauville, Joseph Ghin, Maurice Henry, Pascale Joie, Nadine Lebrun, Marie-Thérèse Mancini, Gustave Marchoul, Moebius, Françoise Pétrovitch, Caty Scheirs, François Schuiten, Roland Topor, Luc Van Malderen, Georges Vercheval, Jeanne Vercheval, Véronique Vercheval, Margot Weemaes, Jean Winance, Aurélie, Béné, Jérôme, Jym, Michel, Phil, Tia, and Véro.

In her work, Eleni Kamma explores the notion of parrhesia, the courage to say what we think, which she approaches from a comical and excessive angle. Echoing the journal Daily-Bul by Pol Bury and André Balthazar, Eleni asked the people of La Louvière about their identity. Who are they? What is La Louvière? Does it claim to be? Is it written on paper? Can it be worn? Between collective creation and cultural heritage, the people of La Louvière, past and present, find themselves in this collaborative exhibition, defined by a tenuous relationship between surrealist heritage, industrial landscape, working-class history, and Carnival in clogs!

This exhibition is part of Residencies, a research programme dedicated to the current practice of printed arts with the aim to encourage a lasting encounter between artists and audiences. Developed by the Centre de la Gravure et de l’Image Imprimée following the call of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, A future for culture, it welcomes four artists in residence since January 2021: the duo Denicolai & Provoost, Eleni Kamma, and Delphine Deguislage. For a full season, the artists have developed research projects rooted in the territory of the region surrounding the centre. Their research is reflected in three exhibitions that present experiments alongside finished works as well as a selection of works from the collections of the Centre de la Gravure and the Daily-Bul&Co.
