019, Ghent

Jubilee associate artists Clémentine Vaultier, Ciel Grommen and Maximiliaan Royakkers share parts of their research Atlas of Ovens, an ongoing collaborative research project on containers of heat. How and what do we fire, with whom do we share the resulting warmth? The artists research how these infrastructures can transform not only matter, but our relationships to communities and territories.

Part of the exhibition is dedicated to a collection of artist’s stoves and heating systems as concrete metaphors for gathering people during the show. The building (itself a ‘perforated’ architecture) will have one heating system working one after the other, displacing the heat source during the whole winter.

Exhibition text by 019:

Beneath a cloud of gathering smoke, the thermostat lies.
A fire is burning. Another dies out.
Conduction, convection.
Bodies gather.
On the waterfront, a pile of ashes.

019 no longer finds itself at the edge of town: residential towers, supermarkets, banks, gas stations, playgrounds and parking lots envelop the building. At the same time, 019’s program is moving into public space more and more. It begs the question what this building is, what its function might be in a landscape that is no longer post–industrial but gentrified. The former welding factory is integrated in the zoning plan for the Oude Dokken as a building with a public function that both supports and complements the new (residential) developments. These are attempts at finding out what this public function could be: a series of exhibitions and interventions that delve into the potential of a perforated building.

Open:
02/12/2022 – 20/03/2023. Opening: 02/12/2022, 20-23h
During weekends 14-18h, during events and by appointment.
