A Modest Proposal (in a Black Box)

Vermeir & Heiremans will show A Modest Proposal (in a Black Box) on the opening night of the 2019 Berlin Programme of Rencontres Internationales.

20/08/2019, 19:30 & 21:30h

Vermeir & Heiremans’ film A Modest Proposal (in a Black Box) investigates if and how financialisation can be repurposed towards a more equitable model. The proposal suggests that through the financialisation of public art collections and/or museum real estate, a cycle of wealth can be created to also benefit its original stakeholders: the artists and art workers. With its punning title, the film questions if returns on public assets can be channeled directly into art institutions and art workers, and benefit a specific group, or if they, on the other hand, should be re-directed back into the public purse, for its use to be determined by democratic processes?

Les Rencontres Internationales traces the specificities and convergences of artistic practices between new cinema and contemporary art, examines new artistic forms and their critical approaches, and provides the necessary time for points of view to meet and be exchanged.

The festival aims to introduce these works of art to a broad audience in order to create pathways between different art forms and different audiences, thus creating an exchange between artists, filmmakers and those involved in artistic and cultural life. It is organised twice each year: in March in Paris, in August in Berlin.
