Oh, for some more Amusement!

Solo exhibition by Eleni Kamma at Netwerk Aalst
19/04 — 13/06/2015
Opening Saturday 18/04/2015 at 20h with live concert by Praire

Eleni Kamma has been invited by Netwerk to unfold her latest film project, Yar bana bir eğlence (Oh, for some Entertainment!) into an individual exhibition.

The ideas for Yar bana bir eğlence, the traditional opening slogan of the classic Karagoz street theater, originated in 2013 during Eleni Kamma’s residency stay in Istanbul, where she witnessed the civil protests in Taksim Gezi Park. The artist reflects on the power of “parrhesia” (freedom of expression) against the backdrop of this raw urban reality, her personal Greek and Cypriot roots and the geopolitical map of the post-Ottoman Empire.

The multi-layered project, which spans the area of film, visual art, performance, theatre and political activism, has so far (during the creation process) only been displayed fragmentarily. Netwerk supports the artist production-wise as well as contextually in translating the various facets and episodes of the project to a new set of autonomous installations.

This project was supported by the Mondrian Fund, NiMAC (Nicosia Municipal Arts Center), PiST/// Istanbul, the Theater aan het Vrijthof, Maastricht, VAF (Flanders Audiovisual Fund) and SoundImageCulture (SIC), where Eleni Kamma is participating in the 2014 program.
